 In 1592, Friar Juan de San Miguel founded a small settlement called Itzcuinapan in the area now known as “El Chorro.” Over time, this humble community grew into San Miguel el Grande, an important stop along the silver route connecting Guanajuato to Mexico City. In 1826, the town was renamed San Miguel de Allende to honor Ignacio Allende, a native son and a key hero of Mexico’s fight for independence. Today, the city center is a breathtaking tapestry of 17th and 18th-century architecture, offering a glimpse into its storied past.
